Default "You got rooked"

Hey, I was just wondering if this is common practice. Guy by the name of (Am I allowed to write his name?) seemed interested in a "Vampiric Notched Blade of Warding" I was Selling and wondered if he could see it. So we go outside Lions Arch so he could see the skin. He starts on about making sure it looks good with his armor, and asked to equip it. So I thought, dude wants to twirl around with a sword see if he likes it? Ok by me. So I trade him for nothing. (Stupid right?) Anyway guys talking like which sword looks better, blah blah blah. He opens trade with me and I think hes giving it back. He runs back into LA after saying "You got rooked!" Now It (the Sword) wasn't real important to me, which is why I let him hold it, but if this is a common practice that has a name (Rooked? What does that even mean?) it kinda pisses me off. I mean you hide behind an Avatar and suddenly taking without payment is ok? Anyway, is there anything I can do about this? Contact a GM or something? Or is it just, Your the person who gave it too him, don't be so trusting? I don't really sell much so I got no idea... Oh and sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

You got scammed, people do that (sad people with no life scams people in the game, seriously)

you can contact support and if your lucky the guy will get banned but besides that, you can't really do much, just don't fall for it.

If someone asks you to go outside so he can see it, see the skin or whatever, just say stuff like "I could link you to a picture on the wiki" and stuff like that, and if he still continues then its a simple case of telling him you're not falling for it and leave it at that (put the guy on ignored or whatever and forget about him)

edit: as for the rooked thing, it just means you made a rookie mistake really (I assume that what the guy meant)

To be "rooked" is to be cheated or scammed. It is a word I hear very rarely outside old novels and such, but yes it was an appropriate usage.

As far as contacting anyone, ANet has stated their official stance in several different places. They made the trade window for a reason, and if you traded it for nothing, then the other player committed no offense. Good thing you didn't care about it.

Rooked is rookie mistake. Hopefully it's taught you to be more careful in future. Seriously, that was not a terribly smart thing to do, but I do feel for your loss. They've not actually done anything wrong 'technically' as you both his 'accept' and therefore accepted the terms of the trade, which in this case was something for nothing.

Very simple rule of thumb....if anyone you don't know asks you to "drop it on the ground", or "I just want to see what it looks like with my armour", then it's a scam attempt.

Never, never trust anyone. People have no dignity. Don't worry too much about it though, a notched blade req 9, not really worth more than ~5k clean.

I tell you what I find amusing though. Him leaving you saying that "you got rooked". That really gets me. He is completely oblivious to the fact that he is the one who lost out. He had a chance to share in your trust and failed, some people, disgusting.

Never let them take the weapon without paying for it.
Never drop an item. EVEN if they say "look, im not an assassin! I can't shadowstep to you to take it!" cus they can, and will.

Just some useful tips. People can be dastards.

As for the meaning and where it comes from, I suppose I should know. Back in the 1500s Europeans used to call people who were kind of obnoxious "rooks" which was the common word for the English Crow. Later, it bacame the term for a "cheat", especially someone who cheated at dice or cards. Later still, it became any manner of cheating. In an interesting parallel, many Native Americans have told stories of Raven/Crow as a trickster (much like Cyote) who would often steal things from the foolish or greedy. My favorite contemporary story happened in Alaska a decade or so ago...All the Eastereggs put out the night before a huge hunt were eaten by ravens so they went out in a hurry the next morning to replace them...during the hunt, ravens pulled the rubber from all the wiperblades in the parking lot...completely "rooked" (literally) everyone there...twice!

A couple of times, I have asked someone to step outside and equip a weapon they were selling so I see what it looked like, if it was something I wasn't familiar with.

Sometimes the pictures on the wiki don't do an item justice. I bought an Igneous blade once because it looked ok in the wiki pic but it turned out to be not so impressive in the flesh. Fortunately, it was fairly cheap and whichever Koss got it didn't seem to mind.

I certainly didn't ask them to let me hold it myself.

I've never heard anyone say "you got rooked" before. Must be his own little victory cry.

But yeah man, you got scammed, and there's not really anything you, or Anet can do about it. Sorry to say. Just be glad the sword didn't mean much to you.

He'll get his comeuppance one of these days.

Just in passing, this is the kind of things I mention by "social engineering" techniques in this short security guide I wrote for GWG:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10298453
(thanks Etta for this link that I forgot, I'll add it)

The guy made you think he was going to give it back, but he didn't intend to. It's a good thing that this was not something worth much for you (risk is always balanced by benefit and cost) and I hope you'll report him successfully and he gets slapped on the hand.

Yeah i got sort of scammed in a different sort of way. I was bringing up an ele in pre-searing. I got her up to lvl 16 and was debating on death lvling her to 20. She had 100k in gold and a crap load of dye's including blacks and whites (accumilated during the weekend to dye for). I was busy doing some dealings when a lower lvl char sent me an invite...so i assumed that he wanted to do a deal with me. Next thing i know it i am on my way to post before i was ready to go. The kid just basically said i was a pwned noob, laughed and then put me on his ignore list so i couldn't even give him an ear full. Now, I didn't lose anything of value. But i got scammed all the same by some stupid kid with nothing better to do. So you really have to be careful in this game. Some people think that your inexperience make you fair game. As he was bragging to his friends, i am sure that they and him blamed you for being that foolish to let him do that. Some people have no honor. Even though it is just a video game.

the next time someone wants to see a weapon equipped you do that yourself...if they want to see how it looks with the armor---they must BUY it first (no plat no give)....simple lesson learned the very hard way--sorry OP
